Give each student several slips of paper. First, ask them to place the papers on their desk to show that they are adding the papers together. Have them explain if the outcome is bigger than each part or smaller.
Do the same thing and ask the same questions if the paper is multiplied (have them cut another piece of matching paper) or divided (the paper will be cut into fractions.
Using the paper as a model, then move on to whole numbers and let the children predict if the outcome would be smaller or larger for addition, multiplication, and division.
