We role-play like we're going to the market to buy fruits and vegetables (using plastic play fruit). After we set out the market stand, then I have the children come by and "buy" the fruit. We talk about how much the grocer has after every transaction and how much each shopper has after each transaction. This is a great way for kindergarteners to use a schema they already know well (the supermarket) to apply adding and subtracting.
