Each student gets a piece of graph paper. First, explain how and have them write numbers and letters on each side of the graph paper to determine the names of the coordinates. Then, using small pieces of paper or small blocks, have them place 'ships' on their graph paper, recording the coordinates. Pair up the children and have them play battleship type game using the coordinates to guess where the ships are.
