Here are two games we play to help students compare numbers. 1. Shuffle a deck of number cards and pass 3-6 cards to each student in the group. The student arrange their cards to make the largest number possible. They compare numbers to determine the winner. In another version of the game, the students must make the smallest number possible. 2. Each student in the group writes 3-6 blanks on a piece of paper. They take turns rolling a number cube. They must write the number they rolled unto one of the blanks. When all rolls are complete, the student with the largest number (or smallers number) is the winner. After each of these games, have the students discuss their strategies. Help them use the correct place value terms as they do so.
